Freedom Yoga is an intuitive approach to Yoga inspired by Erich Schiffman, cultivating the felt awareness and embodiment of one’s instinctual and mystical natures. It is not a strenuous practice but it is a practice that requires you to follow your intuition about what feels right and what doesn’t, listening to your breath and body, but quieting the mind.  As Erich says, “put a comma in it…pause, breathe, relax.”

Enjoy 15 yoga classes with me, from Vinyasa Krama to Yin to Yoga Nidra.  My classes are accessible to all whether you a beginner or someone who has practiced for 20 years.

The retreat is 10 nights with November 17 being your travel day back home.  I wanted to keep your expenses reasonable but your stay extremely comfortable.  Daily continental breakfast is included but lunch and dinner are on your own — and it is exceedingly inexpensive to eat in Varkala.

My students and LYJ readers have asked me for years to make a T shirt for my yoga business, Metta Yoga: Mind-Body Education, and they are finally here, finished today!

The letters mimic the logo font on my new website.  I chose this color because to me green represents EARTH — ECOLOGY — RENEWAL — NATURE — PRAKRITI.

Each one is individually silk screened by hand and is a unique piece of T shirt art, no two exactly alike, and made in America, not China.

I am not making a ton of money from the sale of these shirts.  They are $49.00 (that price includes shipping within the United States) and I will donate $5 from each shirt purchased to the ANIMAL RESCUE CORPS, an organization that saves dogs from fight rings and puppies from puppy mills.  A different charity will be chosen every few months ranging from Native American to women’s to animal charities.  Buying a shirt is COMPASSION IN ACTION so your donation from each shirt shows that you have group, rather than individual, mentality and that is wonderful for the world.

Seven shirts have already been sold sight unseen and I am humbled that two will go outside the USA.  The shirts are not your average yoga T shirt but those who know me know that I could never sell anything average anyway.

In other news, the book that I was interviewed for in 2011 finally came out earlier this year.  Conversations with Modern Yogis features famous yoga teachers such as Erich Schiffmann, David Life and Sharon Gannon, Rodney Yee, Richard Freeman, Richard Rosen…and me.

Author and photographer Zubin Shroff contacted me three years ago and asked to interview me.  I was shocked speechless because I’m a full-fledged yoga nobody, certainly no rock star yoga teacher.  He contacted me because of this blog, calling me a fierce voice in the yoga blogosphere that needed to be heard.  I am honored and humbled to be considered a thought leader in North American yoga.  Now if I could only get people to pay for private yoga classes.

The Magazine of Yoga interviews

It was my supreme pleasure to interview with Susan Maier-Moul, the editor of the fabulous Magazine of Yoga. I can’t remember exactly how we connected, maybe it was via a comment I wrote on her site, but I was honored and humbled (and also excited!) that she asked for an interview. Talking with Susan was like talking with a sister or an old friend so I hope we can meet in person one day!

I have a lot of respect for the Magazine of Yoga. I think it’s a true magazine, instead of print, online. During the Yoga Journal/nude ads debacle, people asked “what else is there?” The Magazine of Yoga will fill your yoga reading needs with authenticity, no egos, and no BS, unlike some “yoga inspired” quasi-magazine sites.

The Magazine of Yoga’s tagline is “Real Life is Real Yoga.” Simple, and similar to this blog’s tagline “yoga is life”, a quote from Krishnamacharya. In Susan’s words:

“The life you’re living is the yoga you’re doing.

The Magazine of Yoga is focused on yoga as a practice of effectiveness in this world and this life. We don’t write specifically about yoga as spiritual because that would be redundant.

Life is spiritual, being you is spiritual. There’s no place you can go to get away from The Universe. Not even the office.”

After reading my interviews, this is what a yogi friend (a mantra teacher) in India wrote to me:

“…gave a glimpse into HOW MUCH DIFFERENTLY the aasanas are practiced in US. What is considered as standard practice (slowness and more time on one aasana) in Bhaarat, is a matter of much discussion and debate in the US. Here, one is considered an aasana-siddha if one can maintain that aasana for one-sixtieth of a day (ie 24 minutes) according to the paatanjala suutra “sthiram sukham aasanam”. Also the mind must be focussed on the breath or the chosen chakra / diety for the entire 24 minutes.”

Yoga IS different in India, as I have said all along.

So now that you’ve read my interviews, if there are any studios out there who would appreciate the eclectic style of this yoga renegade, feel free to contact me. As per Svasti’s suggestion that I should ask people to spread the word about my Yoga Adventure in Africa…I am asking you to spread the word. All of you who are regular readers of this blog and the yoga bloggers on my blogroll, please help spread the word about my yin-yang yoga weekend in Arusha, Tanzania. This yogini of a certain age is bustin’ out of Middle America and going global, baby.

Yes, I know in this global economy that yoga funds are limited but they say if you’re going to dream, dream big, so I’m dreaming big. The fact is that there are always people with disposable income even in crunch times, they just have to find me.

The genesis of this trip is thus: I was asked to teach there. I met Pat at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in 2005 when we both did the month-long intensive. She said that traveling yoga teachers are few and far between in Arusha so could I come teach to the ex-pat yoga community. We kept in touch but the timing was never right for me. Now it is and all things happen for a reason. Here is what I’m offering:

Saturday morning: Yin + Yang practice + meditation (2.5 hours)

Saturday afternoon: Yin practice + meditation (2 hours)

YOGA DESCRIPTION:

We will explore both practices of passive (yin) and active (yang) yoga. Yin yoga consists of long-held poses (3-5 minutes) focusing on the connective tissue of the hips, pelvis, and spine. We will passively stretch the tendons and ligaments in order to unblock and distribute chi (prana) throughout the meridians (nadis), clearing blockages, and helping to balance our organ and meridian systems for our general health. This powerful practice opens your body and enlivens your mind for meditation. A slow flow vinyasa class follows the yin practice visiting the poses that you already love. You will relish the extra space cultivated in the yin poses as you discover a new sense of freedom and grace in yang movement. Recommended for students of all levels with a “beginner’s mind”, and is especially recommended for athletes and all “stiff” yogis! An open mind, rather than an open body, will deepen the experience of this profound and powerful practice.

This is truly a yoga experience of a lifetime because after the yoga weekend there will be two safari options available for you. It’s always been extremely difficult for me to market myself (I need an agent!) When I did my first website it took me 6 months to just write about me. The bottom line is that yoga in the west is big business and I need to get my name out there. Look at any of your favorite big-time yogis and they are not shy about marketing themselves and putting what they offer out there. They also have people who are more than willing to help spread their words.

It’s my time after all these years. According to Wikipedia, Arusha is also the Hindi word for the rising sun. There are no coincidences.

So if you want to help a yoga gal out, spread the word. I’ve already spent $512 on a half-page ad in a local yoga magazine, I need to make back some dough!
